JOB SEARCH TIPS
When applying for a job make sure it's the right fit for you. Consider age and education requirement, distance from home, and hours required. Research both the position and the company before applying for the job.
Check out YouthRules! for information for students and parents about teen employment.
Students can receive interviewing and resume help in the Career Center. PV has a clothes closet for students who would like clothes for the interview.
Remember to GNAP (students in 10th grade will practice this for their Mock Interviews), dress appropriately, bring a resume and know a little about the position and a wage amount that is typical for that job. Minimum wage is a good asking point for someone without experience and in entry level positions.
Parents, your student's first job is a good time for you to help them practice important life skills such as money & time management, initiative, problem solving, conflict resolution and team building. When that first conflict comes up with a boss or co-worker resist the urge to step-in and instead ask them to come up with ways to resolve the situation (that doesn't include quitting right away) give them your feedback and ask how it went afterwards. Remember to be their support and safety net if the job doesn't work out.
